But he can’t just ask Jesse for a favour, because then he would have to admit that to him, would have to actually show some weakness. Jesse’s presence is a trouble for Walt, a weak flank that’s exposed, especially when he’s throwing money out the window. It’s only when he has a real weakness that he can’t play on it to convince somebody. In both cases, it’s the reveal of the false weakness and Walt’s supposed struggle to overcome it that gets sympathy on his side. ![]() He gives Junior just enough weakness to make that positivity sound sincere enough that it’s not pleading, but bland and survivor-y enough that Junior gets to feel like a big man for “seeing through it” and sticking around. Listen to the way he downplays passing out, admitting his frailty even as he tries to gloss it over. Walt takes a similar tactic with Walt Jr., when he confesses that the cancer is back.
